My name is Janiel and for the past three years that I lived in Hawaii, I volunteered for an amazing organization called Family Programs Hawaii. In January of 2017, I will be hiking the Appalachian Trail, which runs from Georgia to Maine and is approximately about 2,200 miles long. I want to make this hike more meaningful by hiking for a cause. It would give me great motivation to complete this hike and make it to finish line, if you would join me on my adventure to help raise funds for children in foster care at Family Programs Hawaii.

Read my journal entries and to make a pledge at http://www.hikefor.com/Babyface/AT/2017/. Pledges will be collected at the end of my hike.
Family Programs Hawaii is a social service agency that provides services to the children and families in the child welfare system. Having experienced first hand the amazing things that the organization provides to the foster youth and their families of Hawaii, I whole-heartedly believe what they stand for. Over the past few years, I have made some amazing memories and bonds to the children, the families, and the staff within the organization. I hold all the cherished moments close to me and will never forget them.
A little bit about me:
I was born on October 10, 1989 in the Philippines and moved to the United States in 1998. I grew up in Lakewood, California and currently reside in Oxnard, CA. I went to the California Academy of Mathematics and Science for high school and attended the University of California Irvine for two years. I joined the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman on April of 2011. My first duty station was Naval Medical Center San Diego, Pediatrics from 2011-2013. My second and last duty station was Marine Corps Base Hawaii, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines from 2014-2016.
I have always enjoyed the outdoors. My family and I would go camping in San Diego, Ventura, and Yosemite. I truly fell in love with hiking when I moved to Oahu, Hawaii. The beautiful views and exciting trails the island offered were unreal. I have hiked dozens of hiking trails and ridges in Oahu. I have also backpacked Haleakala National Park in Maui and the Kalalau Trail in Kauai. I hope to add more hiking trails in my backpacking wish list along with the Appalachian Trail.
